Do you require students to sign contracts?
No. VA uses a month to month billing agreement. Your membership dues will be automatically deducted from your checking account or charged to your credit card each month. To cancel you only need to give 30 days notice.
Can I watch or try out a class before I sign up?
Sure. Feel free to stop by and check out a class in progress or try out a free class to see if our program is right for you.
Do I need a gi to participate?
You will need to buy a Brazilian jiu-jitsu or judo gi to participate in gi classes. These can be ordered online from a number of reputable websites. If you don’t have a gi you can start training anyway but you will be expected to get one ASAP. Appropriate attire for your first few classes without a gi include shorts (tight fitting like board shorts, not loose like basketball shorts) and a t-shirt or rash guard. Women should also wear a sports bra.
Do you have children’s classes?
Yes. We have kids’ class for ages (9-15 yrs) on Saturdays from 3:00-4:00. Mature 15 year olds may move into the adult classes early depending on our assessment and the parent’s permission.
Do you have women’s classes?
Women and men train together. We do not have separate women’s classes.
What sort of safety gear do I need?
Mouthpieces and groin protectors are encouraged but not required. Wrestling headgear is permitted but not required.
How will I know if classes are cancelled?
Cancellations notifications will be made in class (when possible), sent out on the email list, and posted on the Facebook group.
I have rank in another style. What color belt should I wear?
If you have rank in Brazilian jiu-jitsu wear the belt you earned, otherwise wear a white belt.
Do you allow heel hooks during training?
Yes. We train with heel hooks. However, all submission techniques must be applied with caution. You must apply the technique slowly enough to allow the person to tap out. White belts are not allowed to train with heel hooks and upper ranks should not use them on white belts.
What is your drop in fee?
